Swap one teacher, add one new section, or change the bell time — and you may need to rebuild large parts of the schedule by hand.

Why spreadsheets and manual methods break down
Most schools still rely on a combination of:
- Excel or Google Sheets
- Colour coding and conditional formatting
- Memory (“Mrs Rao doesn’t teach after period 6”)

In computer science terms, school timetabling is a constraint satisfaction problem:
- Hard constraints must never be violated (no double-booked teachers, required periods scheduled, breaks honoured).
- Soft constraints should be optimised where possible (balanced days, preferred slots, fewer idle gaps).
When humans solve this with spreadsheets, they are doing constraint solving by trial and error.
When the school grows, trial and error becomes exhaustion.
